Indians Thandi, Desai reach last 16 in Pune Open ITF tourney in Balewadi

Top seed Denis Khazaniuk was shown the door as Indian players Karman Kaur Thandi and Zeel Desai progressed into the last eight at the $25000

Pune Open ITF Women’s Championship at MSLTA School of Tennis, Balewadi, on Wednesday.

In the second round, unseeded Bunyawi Thamchaiwat upset the top-seeded Deniz Khazaniuk of Israel 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour and 27 minutes to enter the quarter-finals.

Two Indian players, third seed Karman Kaur Thandi and wildcard Zeel Desai entered the quarter-finals of the singles. Thandi outplayed Stefanie Tan of Singapore 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour 35 minutes. In a battle of wildcards, Desai edged out Mihika Yadav 7-5, 7-5 in 1 hour 58 minutes.

In another upset of the day, Switzerland’s Karin Kennel beat fifth seed Pei-Chi Lee of Taipei 7-6 (2), 6-1 to make the last eight.

Second seed Jaqueline Adina Cristian of Romania ended Rutuja Bhosale’s campaign with 6-4, 6-4 scoreline in a 1-hour-29-minute battle. Fourth seed Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine got the better of second set challenge from former national champion Sai Samhitha Chamarthi 6-3, 7-5.

EIghth seed Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia was challenged by national champion Mahak Jain before she won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour 54 minutes. Mihalikova served 7 aces and 8 double faults in a error ridden match.

█ █ Strong field for KPIT-MSLTA ATP Challenger

Familiar Indian names, apart from players from over 16 countries, will make a strong line-up for the fourth edition of the $50000

ATP Challenger organised by MSLTA and PMDTA at the Mhalunge- Balewadi Tennis Complex in the city on November 13-18. Among the many, the Indian names that stand out include Davis Cup stars Yuki Bhambri (2014 winner), Ramkumar Ramnathan — both Top-150 players, apart from Saketh Myneni and Prajnesh Gunneswaran.

Rogerio Santos of Portugal has been nominated ATP supervisor for the event, while Sheetal Iyer has been appointed as the referee. The qualifying round will be played on November 11 and 12 followed by the main draws, which begin on November 13. The semi-finals and doubles final are scheduled for Friday, November 17, while the finals will be played on November 18.
